English Day Service
But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect.
Peter, 3:15
Today, Alyssa and I gave the first English Day morning service of the school year. We decided to make English the theme of our service and we spoke about how students can improve their English ability.

We were helped during the service by Rico from 4A and Coco from 4B. During the service, Coco and Rico asked Alyssa and I about our own experiences studying languages and what we had done to improve our language abilities.
Alyssa spoke about her experiences learning Irish. Alyssa told the students that like them she had taken part in a homestay during her time at junior and senior high. During her homestay, Alyssa had to speak in Irish rather than English. She said this was a hard experience but it had helped her to improve her Irish language ability.

I spoke about studying Japanese. I told the students that like them I often worry about making mistakes. However, I have learnt that if I don’t speak in Japanese, I will never improve so I must do my best. We chose ‘do your best’ as the phrase of the day as it suits the theme of the service. We understand that speaking a second language is hard but if you don’t go your best your abilities will never develop.
Finally, I explained my choice of bible reading for today. I chose to read Chapter 3 Verse 15 of Peter. I chose this passage because I think that it is also important for the students to learn how to express their faith and beliefs in English. I explained to the students that this is not an easy task but if we express ourselves in a kind and gentle way, people will listen and this will help to make the world a better place.
