Canadian Students at Eiwa
As you probably know, Eiwa has a strong connection to Canada. Our first principal, Martha Jane Cunningham, was the first woman to cross Canada by train on her own, arriving in Japan in 1887. We can see this connection in many ways, for example in Eiwa’s maple leaf symbol. All our students proudly wear this badge on their uniforms.

Another way that we stay connected to Canada is through an exchange with St. Margaret’s School, our sister school in Victoria, British Columbia. Every two years, students from St. Margaret’s come to Shizuoka for around ten days in September, and then our students go to Canada the following spring. This year seven students were at our school, taking part in classes with our students and staying at homestays.

This exchange is really a wonderful opportunity for both our students and the SMS girls to get to know people from other cultures and countries and exchange ideas and friendly words with them. Next March a group of our girls will have a similar opportunity to experience school and life in a foreign country when they visit St. Margaret’s School. We are sure it will be a meaningful and memorable experience for all and contribute to creating future global leaders.
