カナダ留学だより ウイニペグ 10月 ①
Hi! This is Hana, from Winnipeg. 🍁
It’s getting cold these days. It’s been colder than 10 degrees in the morning and evening. We wear a jacket and sweater to go to school.
10月になり、一気に寒くなってきました。朝晩の気温は10度を下回ります。厚めの上着を着て学校に行きます。
In October, it’s called “SOCKTOBER” for this month. It is a nickname given to October. It combines the word October with socks. The activities are mainly organized by members of the student council, and we collect socks at schools and local communities and donate them with a goal of 30,000 pairs. After the Socktober event, we had a day where all the students came to school with their own crocs. We wore them with colored socks.
10月は「SOCKTOBER」月間です。10月のOctoberと靴下のsockを合わせた造語です。生徒会の人たちを中心に活動していて、学校や地域で30,000組を目標に靴下を集めて寄付します。SOCKTOBERにちなんで、全校生徒が色や柄のある靴下とクロックスを組み合わせて履いて登校する日もありました。

Some club activities started from this week. I joined Youth in Philanthropy (YiP for short). We search for and take part in volunteering and making foundations for Winnipeg. We work together with many people that have different cultures and backgrounds. This week, we had our first meeting so we introduced ourselves and chose a leader and future activities. I think this is a great opportunity to interact with people from different grades. I would like to be able to give my opinions.
クラブ活動も始まり、私はYouth in Philanthropy (通称YiP)に入りました。 (Philanthropyは慈善活動のことです。)校内外のボランティア活動に参加したり、ウィニペグ市内の学校が互いに協力して募金や寄付などをします。様々な文化や背景を持つ誰もが一緒に活動しています。今週は初めての会議で、自己紹介とリーダーの選出、今後の活動についての話し合いをしました。色々な学年の人と交流できる良い機会です。これからも自分の意見や考えを積極的に話していけるようにしたいと思います。
It was Thanksgiving day on October 9th. At Eiwa, we have Thanksgiving service in November, but that is an American holiday. In Canada, we have it in on the second Monday of October. This day is a holiday so our school was off. Our whole family got together and we ate turkey and pumpkin pie that my host mother made. I could spend this day celebrating the bountiful harvest and remembering gratitude.
10月9日はThanksgiving day（収穫感謝の日）です。英和の収穫感謝礼拝は11月ですが、それはアメリカの祝日で、カナダでは毎年10月の第二月曜日がその祝日で、学校はお休みでした。親戚が集まって、ホストマザーが料理した七面鳥やカボチャのパイなどのご馳走を頂きました。豊かな収穫を祝い、感謝の気持ちを忘れずにこの日を過ごすことができました。

This Sunday, we went to the zoo with our host family. It had Halloween events with the theme “BOO at the ZOO!” A lot of little kids were wearing costumes. In the zoo, there were a lot of decorations for Halloween! There were big Jack-o’-lanterns, witches, and so on. There was also a little amusement park inside the zoo and we rode some roller coasters and other rides. This event is held throughout October and it is a big event that our host family goes to every year. I had a very good time with them! On Halloween day, we will wear costumes and go trick or treating with our host sister. I’m very excited about it.
日曜日に家族全員で動物園に行きました。BOO at the ZOO! というハロウィンのイベント中で、小さな子たちは仮装していました。園内にはカボチャなどの大きな置物や魔女やドクロなどの顔はめパネルもありました。動物園の奥には遊園地もあり、コースターなどに乗りました。このイベントは10月いっぱい続き、ホストファミリーの家族では毎年行く大きなイベントだそうです。私もファミリーと一緒にとても楽しい時間を過ごすことができました。ハロウィンの日は、ホストシスターと一緒に仮装をして近所を回ります。今から楽しみです。

I've learned a lot of new things since coming to Canada. Now, I'm feeling Canada with all my mind. I will keep trying to challenge many things on my own.
