Nationwide High School English Essay Contest and Eiken Results
This week we were happy to celebrate two great sets of achievements by our students.
The first was in the Nationwide English Essay Contest. In this contest, students were tasked with writing an essay on a set topic. Students in the first grade were asked to write under the title ‘An impressive video clip I like’ while second and third grade students were asked to write under the title ‘A local problem that we should solve.’ Students in the first grade had to write between 251 and 500 words while students in the second and third grades had to write 301 to 600 words. The Nationwide High School English Essay Contest is an annual contest that is organized by the Prefectural English Teachers Association of Japan with the support of the Ministry of Education. Each year the contest attracts over 20,000 applications with only 250 students being awarded prizes.
In this year’s contest three of our students were awarded prizes. Two from the first grade and one from the second grade. It is a great honour for our students to win prizes in such a competitive contest and we are all very proud of them. We are also very proud of all of the students who took the time to write their essays during the summer vacation. Writing such a long piece in a second language is very difficult and while not everyone could win a prize, we are proud of the effort that everyone made.

This week we also celebrated the great achievements of our students in the EIKEN and IELTS English tests. Many of our students did very well in the most recent EIKEN tests with some achieving exceptionally high scores for their current school grades. In particular, a number of students in the first and second grades of junior high school passed the pre-second level of EIKEN which is exceptionally good. I hope that all of our students are motivated by seeing their schoolmates doing so well and are encouraged to push themselves to achieve the highest scores possible on these very difficult tests.
