Shizuoka Eiwa English Contest

On Saturday 31st July, a very special event was held at our school. The 2021 Shizuoka Eiwa English Contest. Fifth and sixth grade elementary students were invited to our school to take part in an English recitation contest. In total, sixteen elementary students attended the event. The students choose one of five recitations that were each based on a famous English language fairy tale.

The event started with a greeting from our Principal Mr. Ohashi and some words of advice from Ms. Iida. Then three third grade junior high students helped everyone relax by doing a warm up. Once we were all relaxed, the speeches started.

From the start of the speeches it was very clear that the level of the contest would be very high. The first eight speakers were very good and during the break, the judges commented on how difficult choosing a winner would be.

The quality of the second half of the contest was equally high and I was very impressed that students in the fifth and sixth grades of elementary school could speak so well. As the judges left to make their final decision, I knew it would be a hard choice.

While the judges were choosing the winners, the audience were treated to a special speech recitation by a third grade Eiwa student and a performance by the school’s music club who sang Amazing Grace.

After the judges returned, the winners were announced and prizes were given. Although we couldn’t give prizes to everyone, I wanted to say that everyone who took part was a winner. Giving a speech in English is not easy and all of the students did a great job!

I would like to thank everyone for coming to our school for the Eiwa English Contest. I hope they enjoyed the contest and will come back soon.
Our 2021 was a great success and I look forward to the next contest in 2022!
