Valentine’s Day
This past Friday was Valentine’s Day and love was certainly in the air at Shizuoka Eiwa as many students exchanged a number of chocolates and sweets.

Love is a word that is often used in English but its true meaning is sometimes hard to understand. With this in mind, I asked students from the Global Course to think about what love means to them. The students produced some great answers including ‘love is my dog’ and ‘love is a place of my own.’ During my other classes I also took the chance to explain the subtle differences between Valentine’s Day in Japan and other countries.

February 14th was also English day so I also had the chance to give the morning service. As you can probably guess, I took the chance to talk about love and Valentine’s Day. I explained the history of Valentine’s Day in the UK and the cultural differences in the way we celebrate the day in the UK and US. I was really happy that the students from 5B not only helped me to deliver the service but also made some excellent displays.

I hope everyone enjoyed Valentine’s Day and that everyone got a lot of chocolate. However, as I also said in my service, I hope everyone also remembers the little things we can do every day to show people we love them. Receiving chocolate is very nice but sometimes a simple smile or a kind greeting can warm your heart much more than candy can.
