Canada Day at Eiwa
Hello, again! As I said in my introduction in April, I am from Canada. In Canada, we celebrate “Canada Day” on July 1st. “Canada Day” is Canada’s birthday. This year Canada is 153 years old. So happy birthday, Canada!

How did we celebrate Canada Day this year at Eiwa? First, at the end of June, student “cooking volunteers” made shortbread cookies with maple syrup after school. The cookies were easy to make and everyone enjoyed themselves. Students took some cookies home, and we kept others to give away to students in the English café. The students had a great time and are looking forward to another cooking activity in the fall.

Second, for English Day in July, I talked about Canada at the morning service.

In particular, I told the students about Miss Cunningham, who was Eiwa’s first principal, coming to Japan. Her story is really quite amazing. In order to come to Japan in 1887, she had to cross Canada by train. This took two weeks. She was the first woman passenger to cross North America by train on her own. Thirty years ago, students in the art club at Eiwa made an amazing book out of kiri-e about her life. If you have the chance, I highly recommend you looking at this book.

Finally, to celebrate Canada Day, students came to the English Café after school and decorated paper maple leaves.

The students had a lot of creative ideas about how to do this! Afterwards they enjoyed some cold tea and the maple syrup shortbread cookies that the “cooking volunteers” had made. Many thanks to all the students who came to the English Café and participated in this!
Happy Canada Day, everyone!
Happy Canada Day, everyone!
